Interview with writer Leon Augustijn, author of the book IK.
October 9th was your book presentation of your book IK. What message do you want to convey to the readers?
With my book I want to tell my story and thereby show what my inner strength is. Being close to oneself and accepting and following my own feelings. I think it is important to say that the coming out period is exciting, but also a relief. In my case, I can no longer hide myself. I was allowed to be who I was and still am and I wanted that so badly.
Possibly I felt scared and insecure because I was different. Different from the norm.
Why did you start making podcasts and writing a book?
My book gave me the idea of the podcast. In the podcast they are other people’s stories. I know that my story is – unfortunately – not unique. There are many similar stories of rejection. That’s why I wrote this book and created the podcast to generate recognition. In the hope that it might help the reader and listener to become more and more accepting of themselves and others.
On the other hand, my story is unique. We all live in a different system. The context of life is different for everyone. That’s why my story and the stories of others are worth telling. I hope that this will create a more inclusive society in which everyone has more understanding for each other and fewer people are excluded.
Is it easy for you to deal with the refugees’ stories?
Certainly not. These stories are sometimes heartbreaking, but also special, inspiring and motivating for others. An LGBTIQA+ refugee is double the minority. What I mean by this is that these people have struggled with their own identity. Coming out often involves many dangers and risks. Relationships with family and friends become torn. The loneliness will feel doubly heavy. In some cases this is similar among some LGBTIQA+ people in the Netherlands. Consider the religious and faith communities. But fortunately the Netherlands is a country of equal rights. Refugees have had to rebuild their lives and livelihoods in a completely new and strange place. The Netherlands seems like a place where anything is possible and everyone can feel free, but unfortunately that is not yet the case. The Netherlands is tolerant, but acceptance is not everywhere. Walking hand in hand is sometimes quite dangerous for people of the same gender.
Back to your question, I can certainly handle it and I also hope that these stories will be told a lot. We have to share the sometimes hard and painful stories, because that vulnerability can lead to understanding and acceptance.
Do you think more should be written about refugees?
Certainly, the experience story and the life that someone experiences is good to share. People can recognize themselves and relate to the story. The stories also often give hope for better times.
We are very happy and grateful that you will now be working with LGBT World Besides. Why did you choose us?
The LGBTI+ is often focused on the rainbow flag, a rainbow café or a rainbow bench and is very visible. There is nothing wrong with that. I especially like your organization because you look for stories and connections based on equality. I think that’s what it’s all about. By telling stories and generating recognition in the other person, connection and understanding can be created. That’s why I think your organization is so great to work for.

9 oktober was je boekpresentatie van je boek IK. Welke boodschap wil je overbrengen aan de lezers?
Ik wil met mijn boek IK mijn verhaal vertellen en daarmee laten zien wat mijn innerlijke kracht is. Dicht bij zichzelf zijn en mijn eigen gevoel accepteren en volgen. Ik vind het belangrijk om te vertellen dat de coming-out-periode spannend is, maar ook een opluchting. In mijn geval bron ik mezelf niet meer te verstoppen. Ik mocht zijn wie ik was en nu nog steeds ben en dat wilde ik zo graag.
Mogelijk voelde ik me bang en onzeker, omdat ik anders was. Anders dan de norm.
Waarom ben je begonnen met het maken van podcasts en het schrijven van een boek?
Door mijn boek kwam ik op het idee van de podcast. In de podcast zijn het verhalen van anderen. Ik weet dat mijn verhaal – helaas – niet uniek is. Er zijn veel vergelijkbare verhalen van afwijzing. Daarom heb ik dit boek geschreven en de podcast gemaakt om herkenning te genereren. In de hoop dat het misschien de lezer en luisteraar helpt om meer en meer zichzelf en de ander accepteert.
Aan de andere kant is mijn verhaal wél uniek. We leven allemaal in een ander systeem. De context van het leven is bij iedereen verschillend. Daarom is mijn verhaal en het verhaal van anderen, het waard om verteld te worden. Ik hoop dat zo een inclusievere samenleving komt waarin iedereen meer begrip heeft voor elkaar en minder mensen worden buitengesloten.
Hoe ga je om met het van de verhalen van de vluchtelingen?
Zeker niet. Die verhalen zijn soms hartverscheurend maar ook bijzonder, inspirerend en motiverend voor anderen. Een LHBTIQA+ vluchteling is dubbel in de minderheid. Ik bedoel hiermee dat deze mensen hebben geworsteld met hun eigen identiteit. Vaak is een coming-out met veel gevaren en risico’s. Relaties met familie en vrienden raken verscheurd. De eenzaamheid zal dubbel zwaar voelen. In sommige gevallen is dit vergelijkbaar bij sommige LHBTIQA+ mensen in Nederland. Denk hierbij aan de religieuze- en geloofsgemeenschappen. Maar gelukkig is Nederland een land van gelijke rechten. Vluchtelingen hebben hun leven en bestaansrecht opnieuw moeten opbouwen op een geheel nieuwe en voor hun vreemde plek. Nederland lijkt een plek waar alles kan en iedereen zich vrij mag voelen, maar dat is helaas nog niet zo. Nederland is tolerant, maar de acceptatie is niet overal. Hand in hand lopen is voor mensen met hetzelfde geslacht soms nog best gevaarlijk.
Terug naar je vraag, ik kan er zeker tegen en ik hoop ook dat deze verhalen veel verteld gaan worden. We moeten de soms harde en pijnlijke verhalen delen, omdat vanuit die kwetsbaarheid weer begrip en acceptatie kan komen.
Vindt je dat er meer over vluchtelingen zal moeten worden geschreven?
Zeker, het ervaringsverhaal en het leven dat iemand meemaakt is goed om te delen. Mensen kunnen zich herkennen en zich verplaatsen in het verhaal. Ook geven de verhalen vaak hoop op betere tijden.
We zijn erg blij en dankbaar dat je nu met LGBT World Beside gaat werken. Waarom heb je voor ons gekozen?
De LHBTI+ is vaak gericht op de regenboogvlag, een regenboogcafé of een regenboogbankje en is heel zichtbaar. Daar is niets mis mee. Ik vind jullie organisatie vooral mooi omdat jullie vanuit gelijkheid de verhalen en de verbinding zoeken. Daar gaat het volgens mij ook om. Door verhalen te vertellen en herkenning te genereren bij de ander, kan er verbinding en begrip komen. Daarom vind ik jullie organisatie zo mooi om mij voor in te zetten.

9 октября была презентация вашей книги “Я”. Какое послание вы хотите донести до читателей?
Своей книгой я хочу рассказать свою историю и тем самым показать, в чем моя внутренняя сила. Быть ближе к себе, принимать и следовать своим чувствам. Я думаю, важно сказать, что период каминг-аута является захватывающим, но также и облегчением. В моем случае я больше не могу скрывать себя. Мне разрешили быть тем, кем я был и остаюсь, и я так сильно этого хотел.
Возможно, я чувствовал страх и неуверенность, потому что я был другим. Отличается от нормы.
Почему вы начали делать подкасты и писать книгу?
Моя книга натолкнула меня на идею подкаста. В подкасте — истории других людей. Я знаю, что моя история, к сожалению, не уникальна. Есть много подобных историй отказа. Вот почему я написал эту книгу и создал подкаст, чтобы добиться признания. В надежде, что это поможет читателю и слушателю все больше и больше принимать себя и других.
С другой стороны, моя история уникальна. Мы все живем в другой системе. Жизненный контекст у всех разный. Вот почему мою историю и истории других стоит рассказать. Я надеюсь, что это создаст более инклюзивное общество, в котором все будут лучше понимать друг друга и меньше людей будет исключено.
Легко ли вы справляетесь с историями беженцев?
Конечно, нет. Эти истории иногда душераздирающие, но в то же время особенные, вдохновляющие и мотивирующие для других. Беженцы ЛГБТИКА+ в два раза больше меньшинства. Я имею в виду, что эти люди боролись со своей идентичностью. Открытие часто сопряжено со многими опасностями и рисками. Отношения с семьей и друзьями портятся. Одиночество будет вдвойне тяжелее. В некоторых случаях то же самое происходит и с некоторыми ЛГБТИКА+ людьми в Нидерландах. Взгляните на религиозные сообщества. Но, к счастью, Нидерланды — страна равных прав. Беженцам пришлось заново строить свою жизнь и средства к существованию в совершенно новом и незнакомом месте. Нидерланды кажутся местом, где все возможно и каждый может чувствовать себя свободным, но, к сожалению, это пока не так. Нидерланды толерантны, но признание есть не везде. Ходить рука об руку иногда довольно опасно для людей одного пола.
Возвращаясь к вашему вопросу, я, конечно, справлюсь и надеюсь, что об этих историях будут рассказывать много раз. Нам приходится делиться порой тяжелыми и болезненными историями, потому что эта уязвимость может привести к пониманию и принятию.
Считаете ли вы, что о беженцах нужно больше писать?
Конечно, полезно поделиться историей опыта и жизнью, которую кто-то пережил. Люди могут узнать себя и проникнуться этой историей. Истории также часто дают надежду на лучшие времена.
